About this bottle

Distilled way back in September 1980 and bottles in 2021, this single cask from Caol Ila was matured for four decades in a refill hogshead, until being bottled by Douglas Laing as part of their Xtra Old Particular series. With Islay whiskies of this age being pretty rare this Caol Ila is a limited release of just 206 bottles. This being bottle number 30!!

Lot Conditions

Bottles in this auction are never classed as brand new. Boxes, bottles and packaging may carry marks or creases due to age. Please inspect the photographs closely before bidding, and contact us for an in-depth condition report: if a report is not requested, lots are sold as seen.

Given the age of the bottles and seals, the condition of the liquid is at the buyer’s discretion. Bottles can be insured against breakage or loss, not leakage.

  • A 12.5% + VAT buyer’s premium is added to the hammer price.
  • Payment is due within three days of the auction ending. After that, a further 5% + VAT of the hammer price is added.
  • Bids are binding. By bidding you accept the terms and conditions.

About the distillery

Caol Ila is derived from Gaelic Caol Ìle for "Sound of Islay" in reference to the distillery's location overlooking the strait between Islay and Jura. It was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson. The distillery did not fare well, and changed hands in 1854 when Norman Buchanan, owner of the Isle of Jura Distillery, took over. In 1863 the business was acquired by Bulloch Lade & Co, of Glasgow, traders in whisky stocks.
