About this bottle

The Laphroaig 1960 Vintage Reserve is one of the absolute "holy grails" for Islay whisky collectors and investors. Distilled in March 1960 under the guidance of the legendary Bessie Williamson (the first female distillery manager of the 20th century), this astoundingly rare single malt was matured for four decades in the distillery’s famous beachfront Warehouse No. 1 before being bottled in the year 2000.

Lot Conditions

Bottles in this auction are never classed as brand new. Boxes, bottles and packaging may carry marks or creases due to age. Please inspect the photographs closely before bidding, and contact us for an in-depth condition report: if a report is not requested, lots are sold as seen.

Given the age of the bottles and seals, the condition of the liquid is at the buyer’s discretion. Bottles can be insured against breakage or loss, not leakage.

  • A 12.5% + VAT buyer’s premium is added to the hammer price.
  • Payment is due within three days of the auction ending. After that, a further 5% + VAT of the hammer price is added.
  • Bids are binding. By bidding you accept the terms and conditions.

About the distillery

The Laphroaig distillery was established in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston. The Johnstons who founded Laphroaig were from the Clan Donald and are likely to be from the MacIain of Ardnamurchan branch of the clan. The family anglicised their name to Johnston. The last member of the Johnston family to run the distillery was Ian Hunter, a nephew of Sandy Johnston, who died childless in 1954 and left the distillery to one of his managers, Bessie Williamson.
