The intense character comes from their own richly peaty water supply; the heavily peated barley; the unusually long fermentation of up to 75 hours; and the slowest distillation of any Islay malt. A much sought-after single malt Scotch whisky with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay. Lagavulin 16 year old has truly become a benchmark Islay dram from the Lagavulin distillery.
